2016 U.S. Elections for Congress and Governorships
In addition to being an artist, I'm a political nerd.
UPDATED Election Tracker sheet with election results. View and/or download it below.
Every two years I compile a list of competitive House, Senate and gubernatorial races. Most of this is of course being overshadowed this year by the monumentally significant and mindbogglingly close presidential race, but for those of you still interested in tracking these other races on election night, I've created the handy one-pager that you can download below (one-pager if you print double-sided).
Note that races have been ranked in tiers, which can help provide early indications of which way the election is going to swing. For example, the Democrats' tier 1 targets should be the easiest for them to win. If you notice early in the evening that they're winning races in their tier 3 House target list, then we could be headed for a major upset, with the potential for the House to flip to Democratic control. Conversely, if Democrats are not winning many races in their tier 1 target list, then their efforts to significantly cut into the GOP majority will likely be a flop.
On this sheet, the Senate is where the real action is, with tight races that will determine who runs the Senate next year.
As for the governors, you'll note that it's looking likely Republicans will make some gains and potentially control 35 governors mansions come January, which would be a record. These races will be particularly consequential in 2018, when the winners of those races will play a key role in House redistricting.
Someday this will be a table that gets updated live online on election night. Stay tuned for that in 2018.
